Residents on Ewenny Road in Maesteg are living in fear due to frequent crashes caused by drivers speeding on the 20mph street. Jon Brown, 30, reported that his car has been hit twice and his partner's car once since the start of the year, with drivers reaching speeds of 50 to 60mph.
Residents Consider Moving After Multiple Crashes
Mr Brown said: "It's a real worry because lots of us that live on this road have young children. My son is two and I dread to think what could happen if we are outside at the wrong time." He added that a car once drove at 100mph and crashed into someone's living room six years ago.
Residents have written to the council and local councillor but feel nothing is being done. "We need speed bumps or a camera or just anything to make it safer for everyone," Mr Brown said. "We are thinking of moving because of it, having had two cars written off since January, plus replacing my wing mirror at my own expense."
Community Desperate for Action
Mr Brown's neighbours, who have lived on the street for over 25 years, are also considering moving. "I don't know what needs to happen for us to be taken seriously by the council," he said. "It is not even that narrow of a street. It is the speed people are driving at that's the problem."
The situation has become so dire that residents considered pooling their own money for a speed bump. "At one point we were all going to ask the council how much it would cost to put a speed bump in, and all chip in for one ourselves," Mr Brown added.
Council and Police Response
A spokesperson for Bridgend County Borough Council said: "Bridgend County Borough Council is aware of concerns relating to inappropriate and anti-social driving at this location. We are actively considering what measures may be appropriate while also bringing the residents’ concerns to the attention of South Wales Police."
A South Wales Police spokesman said: "South Wales Police is aware of residents’ concerns about speeding on Ewenny Road; we have active patrols in the area to combat speeding and urge residents to report any speeding or dangerous driving offences to us as soon as possible so we can investigate."
