Ryan Gravenberch delivered a standout performance for the Netherlands in their 2-2 World Cup draw with Japan, providing evidence that he can be a key player for Liverpool under new head coach Andoni Iraola.
Gravenberch's Liverpool Journey
Signed by Jurgen Klopp in 2023, Gravenberch initially struggled to make a consistent impact. However, under Arne Slot, he flourished as a deep-lying midfielder, winning a Premier League title and the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2024/25. Yet last season, his form dipped as opponents targeted him, exposing defensive weaknesses.
International Resurgence
Against Japan, Gravenberch played 81 minutes, providing two assists, completing 88% of his passes, and recording the joint-most dribbles. Playing with Frenkie de Jong behind him, he roamed forward, delivering a pinpoint cross for Virgil van Dijk's opener and a simple pass for Crysencio Summerville's goal.
Despite his deep role, Gravenberch scored six goals last season, his most in senior football. However, there is potential for more attacking output.
Iraola's Opportunity
New Liverpool boss Iraola has stated every player will be a 'new signing' to him. By pairing Gravenberch with a more defensive midfielder, like De Jong or Endo, he could unlock the Dutchman's full potential, allowing him to impact games in final third areas.
Gravenberch signed a contract until 2032, and Iraola should be thrilled to have such a versatile midfielder as a cornerstone for the next chapter at Anfield.
