Former Newcastle Youngster Campbell Joins South Shields for Promotion Push
Ex-Newcastle Star Campbell Joins South Shields

Adam Campbell, who once held the record as Newcastle United's youngest player in European competition, has joined National League North side South Shields, reuniting with former Magpies teammate Mike Williamson. At 31, Campbell is now one of the more experienced players in the squad and is ready to embrace a leadership role.

Campbell's Early Promise at Newcastle

Campbell was a standout in Newcastle's academy, winning the Most Valuable Player award at the 2010 Nike Cup, a tournament previously graced by Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs. He made his European debut as a late substitute against Atromitos in the Europa League, becoming the club's youngest player in Europe at the time—a record later broken by Lewis Miley in 2023. He went on to make a handful of senior appearances for the Magpies before moving to clubs like Notts County, Gateshead, and Crawley Town.

Reunited with Williamson at South Shields

Campbell has now signed for South Shields, where he will work under Mike Williamson, who also played for Newcastle. Campbell is expected to be one of the more seasoned players in the squad, and he is keen to set a good example for younger teammates. He told Chronicle Live: “I have probably felt like an experienced head since I was at Gateshead really because Mike made me part of the leadership group... There is a pressure to set a good example because it is a young, impressionable squad.”

Familiar Faces Ease Transition

Campbell already knows several members of the South Shields squad, having played alongside Paul Blackett, Robbie Tinkler, and Cedwyn Scott at Gateshead, and with Jack Roles and Jasper Sheik at Crawley. This familiarity has helped him settle quickly. “When you’re in this part of the world, you know most of the players so it’s been really easy to settle in,” he said. “I class Robbie Tinkler as one of my better mates I’ve made in football.”

Promotion Ambitions

South Shields narrowly missed out on the National League North title last season and lost in the play-off final. Campbell revealed that the club's ambition and Williamson's style of play were key factors in his decision to join, despite interest from other clubs. “It’s about the way they want to play and what they want to do this season,” he explained. “The club has been on my radar for a few years... I honestly think if it’s not this season, it will be next season that we will be a National League club.”
