A simple kitchen staple can dramatically improve the taste of baked beans. Worcestershire sauce, an ingredient found in most kitchens, adds depth and savoury richness to the classic dish, according to a recent experiment.
Why Worcestershire Sauce Works
Baked beans are typically sold in a sweetened tomato sauce with minimal seasoning. Worcestershire sauce, being acidic, cuts through the sweetness and enhances the tomato flavour. It also contributes a savoury, umami quality without overpowering the beans.
Katherine McPhillips, who tested various condiments, found Worcestershire sauce to be the undisputed champion. She said: 'I simply can't eat them without a splash of Worcestershire sauce — it adds so much depth of flavour with minimal effort.'
How to Upgrade Your Beans on Toast
To make enhanced baked beans, you need: one can of baked beans, two slices of bread, one teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, grated cheese, butter (optional), and black pepper.
Method: Toast the bread. Simmer the beans in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and black pepper. Optionally add smoked paprika. Cook for two minutes until bubbling. Butter the toast, spoon beans on top, scatter cheese, and add a few drops of Worcestershire sauce. Bake at 200°C for two minutes until bubbling.
This quick upgrade takes under five minutes and transforms a cheap meal into a flavourful comfort food.
