Vivianne Miedema has revealed that her recent absence from Manchester City's Women's Super League matches was due to her mother experiencing serious complications after chemotherapy for cancer. The 29-year-old forward missed the final two games of the season as her team-mates clinched the league title on Wednesday night.
Miedema's Social Media Statement
In an emotional Instagram post on Thursday morning, the Dutch international opened up about the family crisis. “The last 2.5 weeks have been really difficult for us as a family,” she wrote. “My mum had serious complications after her chemo treatment for cancer and has been in the ICU since. She’s been fighting for her life, and by some miracle, she is still here. Now she’s fighting hard through the small steps of recovery, although there are still many big hurdles ahead.”
Miedema thanked fans for their support and added: “PS. Can’t wait to tell mum we won the league.”
Title Triumph and Season Contribution
Manchester City secured their first WSL title since 2016 after Arsenal, whose defence of the Women's Champions League ended with a semi-final loss to Lyon, drew 1-1 at Brighton. City’s coronation was confirmed as the Gunners dropped points in their first of three matches in hand.
Miedema, the all-time leading scorer in WSL history, contributed 10 goals in 19 appearances this season. Her team-mates displayed a shirt bearing her name and number during title celebrations.
The forward’s absence was initially attributed to a “family matter,” but she has now provided full context, highlighting her mother’s ongoing recovery journey.
