Aston Villa squandered a golden opportunity to strengthen their Champions League aspirations after a lacklustre 1-0 defeat at Fulham on Saturday. Ryan Sessegnon, who recently had his contract extended, netted the decisive goal, securing only Fulham's second victory in ten matches.
Match Overview
Fulham head coach Marco Silva made three changes to the starting lineup, dropping Rodrigo Muniz to the bench in favour of Raul Jimenez, while Samuel Chukwueze and Sander Berge also came in. Aston Villa, missing Amadou Onana, gave a starting spot to Lamare Bogarde, with Pau Torres and Emi Buendia returning to the side.
First Half Action
Fulham started brightly at Craven Cottage, with Harry Wilson and Emile Smith Rowe finding space in the area but failing to capitalise. Sasa Lukic drove a powerful run at Emiliano Martinez as the hosts dominated early proceedings. Villa offered little in the opening half-hour, with only a few corners that came to nothing.
The game settled into a lull until Villa sprang to life just before the half-hour mark. Morgan Rogers picked up the ball on the left flank, worked his way into the area, and fired a shot wide in the 33rd minute. Moments later, Ollie Watkins dragged his effort narrowly off target as Villa finally found their attacking rhythm.
However, Fulham took the lead with two minutes of the half remaining. Timothy Castagne's cross found Lukic, whose header forced a save from Martinez, but Sessegnon pounced on the rebound to score his third goal of the campaign. It was no more than the hosts deserved in a game that desperately needed a goal.
Second Half Struggles
Villa needed a response after the break, but it could have been worse when Wilson fired just wide two minutes into the second half. The visitors continued to look flat and lacked energy or cutting edge, exemplified by Watkins running into space on the hour mark but firing well off target.
Fulham thought they had doubled their lead on 66 minutes when Castagne headed home from a Lukic corner, but VAR ruled that Berge had fouled Martinez in the area during the delivery. Villa continued to labour in the final third as Fulham held firm at the back.
Manager Unai Emery made five substitutions, including replacing the ineffective Watkins with Tammy Abraham, who had scored a 93rd-minute winner against Sunderland the previous week. However, Abraham put his first touch well over the bar on 83 minutes, summing up Villa's day.
With four minutes of injury time, Fulham saw out the game drama-free to earn a deserved victory.
