A teenage couple from Derby has purchased a three-bedroom house for £169,000 without any financial help from their parents. Paulina Gammon, now 21, and her husband Stanley, also 21, managed to save £20,000 in just seven months while still living at home.
The couple, both working in aviation, each earned £1,800 per month and put aside between £1,000 and £1,500 monthly by cutting back on four key areas: nights out, meals out, new clothes and takeaways. They paid minimal board to their parents – £100 for Paulina and £170 for Stanley – and avoided spending on a car or holidays.
Paulina said: 'Nobody believed us at the start and assumed our parents must have helped us. Even the estate agents and solicitors were in shock; it is a huge achievement.' The pair started saving in January 2024 after Paulina's parents decided to move to Poland.
By June 2024, when they were both 19, they made an offer on a three-bedroom, three-bathroom property and completed the move in September. Paulina was three months pregnant at the time. Their mortgage repayments are £1,100 per month, which Paulina now supplements with income from her TikTok account.
The couple encourages other young people to save aggressively while living at home. 'If you're still living at home, save as much money as you can, because once you move out, and the older you get, the more bills you have,' Paulina advised.
