Drive Over Speed Bumps Correctly to Cut Fuel Costs, Experts Say
Save Fuel by Avoiding Speed Bump Errors

As the cost of living continues to rise, experts have shared advice on how Britons can drive more efficiently to save money. With the ongoing Middle East crisis pushing fuel prices higher, cutting costs at the pump has become a priority for many drivers.

How Speed Bumps Affect Fuel Consumption

According to automotive specialists at LQK Euro Car Parts, the way drivers approach speed bumps can significantly impact fuel usage. By minimising unnecessary acceleration and braking, particularly in areas with multiple speed bumps, motorists can reduce fuel wastage. The key is to maintain a steady pace between bumps rather than constantly speeding up and slowing down.

The experts explained: "Acceleration and deceleration whilst driving can mean extra fuel is used, and this includes driving over speed bumps, so learning how to properly tackle them could save motorists a lot of money. Drivers can avoid unnecessary fuel consumption by driving at a constant speed and avoiding accelerating or braking too often in between speed bumps, which is when most fuel is used."

This advice does not mean driving over speed bumps at 20mph, as some types can cause excessive wear and tear at that speed. Instead, it focuses on smooth driving between bumps.

Bank Holiday Travel Tips

The guidance comes ahead of the first May bank holiday weekend, when motorists have been warned to avoid refuelling at certain times. RAC mobile servicing and repairs team leader Sean Kimberlin offered additional tips for maintaining vehicle efficiency.

Sean said: "Even though fuel prices are uncomfortably high, it clearly takes a lot to stop drivers taking to the roads to make the most of a bank holiday weekend. Checking your oil and coolant are both nicely between the minimum and maximum lines is the first step, followed by ensuring the tyres have plenty of tread, are in good condition, and are pumped up to the right pressures, something that also helps with fuel economy. Screenwash is also important at this time of year to make sure you always have a good, clear and bug-free view of the road."

Best Times to Travel

Sean also highlighted when congestion would be heaviest. "Beating the traffic is another key part of any bank holiday weekend. Leaving earlier than everyone else is the best tactic, but those with young families may well struggle to do this. Our long-term data shows that Saturday morning from 10am to lunchtime will see the heaviest traffic, almost certainly on the M5 from Bristol to Taunton as people head to Devon and Cornwall."

By following these simple tips, drivers can improve fuel economy and save money during expensive times.
