RAC Offers Fuel Saving Tips Amid Oil Crisis and Price Concerns
RAC Fuel Saving Tips Amid Oil Crisis

Drivers across the UK are understandably worried about rising fuel prices as oil markets remain unsettled due to ongoing disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping corridor. With no clear resolution in sight, motoring experts at RAC have shared practical advice on how to save fuel.

Simple Changes to Improve Fuel Economy

RAC experts emphasise that routine maintenance and servicing help keep vehicles running efficiently, which can improve fuel economy. They also urge drivers to keep their load as light as possible. According to the Energy Saving Trust, an empty roof rack adds 16% drag when driving at 75mph, while a roof box adds 39%, significantly reducing fuel efficiency.

Driving with an open window has a similar effect due to increased wind resistance. RAC advises: "Don't leave your roof bars and roof box on because they create wind resistance and cause your car to use more fuel through the ‘drag’ effect. This is increased the faster you drive."

Limit Use of Air Conditioning and Heating

Motorists can also try limiting the use of air conditioning, as it draws power from the engine and increases fuel consumption. The same applies to heating. RAC suggests: "If fuel efficiency is a priority, try to dress appropriately for the weather even when you’re in the car."

Check Tyre Pressure Regularly

RAC stresses the importance of maintaining correct tyre pressure, as both underinflated and overinflated tyres adversely affect fuel economy. Drivers should refer to their owner’s manual for the recommended pressure, which depends on the vehicle's load. If the car is full of passengers and luggage, tyres should be inflated to the maximum recommended level.

Don't Panic Buy Fuel

Experts urge people not to panic buy fuel, as there is no need to do so. Luke Bosdet, a spokesman for the AA, advised: "Stick to your usual refuelling routines. There’s no point wasting time, fuel and money queuing when drivers don’t need to."
