Financial experts have issued a stark warning that countless individuals are missing out on substantial sums of money from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), with average unclaimed benefits totalling £3,000 per year. This equates to a significant £250 each month that could be bolstering household incomes across the UK.
The Scale of Unclaimed Support
The team at Money Wellness, a financial support group, has highlighted that many people fail to apply for benefits they are rightfully entitled to, even when they are aware such support exists. Rebecca Lamb, External Relations Manager at Money Wellness, explained that barriers extend beyond mere awareness.
"It's not just awareness. There are other barriers too. Stigma is still a big one. A lot of people feel uncomfortable about claiming benefits, especially if they've worked all their lives," she stated.
Pension Credit as a Key Example
For instance, those of state pension age with low incomes may be eligible for Pension Credit, a benefit that could dramatically improve their financial situation. Despite many having paid their way throughout their working lives and planning to continue self-sufficiency in retirement, checking eligibility is crucial.
The average Pension Credit claim provides over £4,000 in support, topping up weekly income while unlocking access to additional means-tested assistance. Specifically, it boosts income to up to £238 weekly for single claimants and £363.25 for couples, with extra amounts available for circumstances like severe disabilities or caring responsibilities.
Overwhelming Application Processes
Ms Lamb cautioned that the application process itself often deters potential claimants. "The process can also put people off. It can feel complicated, it's definitely time-consuming, and it can be quite overwhelming if you're already struggling," she noted.
Additional factors include fear of rejection, which prevents many from even attempting to apply, and the pressures of daily life. "People are busy, they're dealing with bills, work, family pressures, and applying for support gets pushed to the bottom of the list," she added.
A Call for Proactive Measures
Ms Lamb emphasised that most people do not routinely check their benefit entitlements, creating a need for more proactive efforts from organisations. "There's a real opportunity for more organisations to be more proactive. At the moment, too much relies on people knowing when to check, and in reality, most people don't," she advocated.
She suggested that the DWP or local authorities could prompt individuals when circumstances change, such as with a simple message indicating they may want to review their entitlements. Service providers like banks and utility companies also have a role, as they can spot early signs of financial strain, such as increasing overdrafts or missed payments, and direct customers toward benefit checks or debt advice.
Tools to Discover Eligibility
To help people uncover what benefits they might be eligible for, several online calculator tools are available, including the Better Off Calculator. These resources can simplify the process and ensure that more individuals access the financial support they need, potentially preventing situations from worsening due to unclaimed funds.
