After two weeks of sexual frustration during a relentless heatwave, Sydney Summers and her partner Sebastian found an unexpected solution in their garden paddling pool. The couple, who typically enjoyed a frequent sex life, had been unable to have sex because the sweltering temperatures made physical contact unbearable.
Heatwave Disrupts Intimacy
The heatwave had made daily life exhausting. Fans were placed in every room, and even the cat sought refuge under the coffee table. The couple ate only cold foods and avoided using the oven. Sydney described rummaging in the fridge like raccoons. The oppressive heat also put a halt to their sex life, leaving Sydney feeling sexually frustrated.
An earlier attempt at sex had gone wrong. Sydney put on lingerie, but the heat made the strings and ribbons irritating. The sheets stuck to her skin, and the fan only moved hot air around. When Sebastian entered the bedroom, Sydney was grunting in frustration at the ribbons. They attempted sex, but as soon as their bodies touched, sweat piled up between them, and they became exhausted before anything could happen. Sebastian pushed her away, saying, 'No, I can’t', before taking a freezing-cold shower.
Inspiration from Showgirls
The breakthrough came the next evening while watching the cult classic film Showgirls. As the famous swimming pool sex scene played, Sydney had an idea. 'Wait,' she said, pushing Sebastian off her. 'Babe – we have a paddling pool.' Sebastian understood immediately, and they agreed to try it the next day.
The following morning, Sebastian set up the paddling pool in the garden. It was about 2 metres long, large enough for both of them. They added a cheap gazebo for shade. At 10am, Sydney jumped in, and they pressed their bodies together. 'After a week of not being able to even hug without getting too hot, we were finally able to touch each other,' Sydney wrote. 'And my god, did we touch.'
Intimacy Over Intercourse
They did not have sex in the pool, respecting neighbours and acknowledging that pool sex is not technically safe due to lack of good lubrication. However, the intimate touching satisfied their need for closeness. 'I always find intimacy more satisfying than sex itself,' Sydney explained. 'When he holds my hand, I smile. When he gives me a random hug, my shoulders relax.'
The paddling pool now sits proudly in their garden and is, according to Sydney, 'awfully overused'. The heatwave had made her realise how much she missed simple physical connection. 'During this heatwave, I hadn’t realised how much of that I missed. Luckily, we’ve got our paddling pool – and we’re able to get close again.'
This story highlights how creative solutions can help couples maintain intimacy during extreme weather conditions, even when traditional sex is not possible.
