Woman Wins £144k Postcode Lottery Prize While Recovering from Major Surgery
Woman wins £144k lottery prize from hospital bed

A woman from County Durham received the shock of her life after winning a staggering £144,000 in the People's Postcode Lottery – all while lying in a hospital bed convinced she might not survive her recent major surgery.

From Hospital Recovery to Life-Changing News

Gail Wood, a 54-year-old fire control operator from Seaton Carew, had just undergone a hysterectomy. After waking in the recovery room, her first thought was to message loved ones to confirm she had made it through the operation, having genuinely feared for her life.

It was then she noticed a voicemail. The message was from the People's Postcode Lottery, informing her she had won a prize and that representatives would be visiting her street the very next day. "I never ever expected to win anything like this. It’s nothing short of life-changing," Gail said.

'You're Off Your Head': A Disbelieving Husband

In a state of disbelief, Gail immediately called her husband, Jason, 56. A retired watch manager at Hartlepool fire station, Jason was initially convinced his wife was confused from post-operative medication. "He thought I was making it up because of the drugs," Gail explained. "He said, ‘You’re off your head.'"

His scepticism turned to astonishment when he realised the news was true. Remarkably, Jason revealed he had experienced a vivid dream about winning a large sum of money just days before, a rare occurrence for him.

A Practical Windfall for a Deserving Couple

The following morning, after Gail returned home, the lottery team arrived at her door. She discovered she and two neighbours had landed the lottery's 'An Unforgettable Year' prize. Her share amounted to £12,000 per month for a full year, totalling £144,000.

Despite the enormous win, the couple, who have three children and five grandchildren, plan to spend the money sensibly. Priorities include a new front door, a driveway, and potentially upgrading their campervan so the family can share it. "Nothing fancy - just getting away as a family," Gail stated.

The win also offers Gail, who turns 55 in September, the choice of early retirement from her role in the fire service control room, where she has worked for years alongside Jason, who served on the front line.

Both are well-known locally for extensive charity and volunteer work, from fire service causes to rugby club fundraising and Meals on Wheels. "I know she’s my wife, but Gail deserves everything," Jason added. "She does so much for everyone else."
