The 'best' UK mobile network has been confirmed by consumer group Which?, and the news is not favourable for EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2. Millions of Britons continue to rely on the big four networks for connectivity, but a new report indicates that these major providers are failing to match their smaller competitors in overall performance.
Which? Survey Results
Which? surveyed over 5,000 smartphone users nationwide to identify which providers meet customer expectations. The findings reveal that lesser-known networks often deliver superior value and stronger customer service. The traditional 'Big Four' — EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone — continue to lag behind many smaller rivals.
Top-Ranked Networks
Leading the rankings was Talkmobile with an 83% satisfaction score, followed by Tesco Mobile (81%), Giffgaff (79%), and SMARTY (79%). Among the big four, EE performed best, coming in ninth place with 74%. O2 and Three were among the lowest-ranked networks, scoring 67% and 65% respectively.
Price Comparison
Price was a key factor highlighted in the report. Which? found that customers on the Big Four paid an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, compared to just £9 for those using smaller networks. Lower prices do not necessarily mean worse coverage, as many smaller providers use the infrastructure of the major networks. This means customers can often access the same signal and service quality without paying premium prices for a well-known brand.
Ease of Switching
Switching networks is easier than many assume, with some customers able to change providers in as little as 10 minutes. One Which? member reported leaving O2 after their monthly bill rose from £17 to £27, switching to an £8 SMARTY plan in just ten minutes, saving around £200 per year.
Expert Comment
Natalie Hitchins, Which? Head of Home Products and Services, said: 'Our latest research shows that smaller providers are consistently outshining the industry’s largest mobile firms by offering better customer service and far cheaper deals. Many top-rated challengers avoid mid-contract price hikes, offering households struggling with the cost of living much-needed certainty. Any customers nearing the end of their contract who are unhappy with their service, or simply looking to save money, should not hesitate to switch to a provider that genuinely offers better value.'
