Brits have been urged to check their spare change for three rare £2 coins that could be worth significantly more than their face value. These coins could potentially fetch over £1,000 from keen collectors, but you need to know which years and specific minting errors to look for.
Expert Reveals Valuable Coins
In a TikTok video, an expert known as Coin Collecting Wizard shared the three valuable coins with his audience of over 250,000 followers. He asked, "Have you got any £2 coins? Check out these worth big money - the last one will blow your mind."
Commonwealth Northern Ireland Coin (2002)
This coin is the rarest £2 coin you can find in circulation. With only 485,000 minted, it can be worth up to £65 in brand new condition. The coin features the Northern Irish flag on the reverse side, part of a set representing the four UK nations. In uncirculated condition, it is worth around £35, and up to £65 if mint condition.
King James Bible Coin (2011)
Released to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, only 975,000 of these coins were minted. The reverse side features the opening passage from the Book of John, and the edge is inscribed with "King James Bible" and "1611-2011". In circulated condition, it is worth around £4, and up to £20 if brand new.
Lord Kitchener Coin (2014) with Mule Error
This is the most valuable coin on the list, worth up to £1,000. The commemorative coin marks 100 years since the start of World War One. However, the rare error version, known as a mule error, lacks the words "two pounds" on the Queen's side. In February 2024, one example sold for £1,000 at auction. If your coin doesn't have that inscription, you have found the rare error.
