Tesco has announced a major expansion of its Aldi Price Match scheme to more than 2,000 Express convenience stores across the UK, enabling shoppers to access everyday essentials at prices matching the German discount grocer. This move, the largest shake-up for the scheme since its launch in May 2020, aims to alleviate the rising cost of living for millions of Britons.
Scheme Expansion Details
The price match initiative will cover over 200 items in Tesco Express stores, though the exact range may vary by store size and location. Staple products such as pasta, milk, iceberg lettuces, and tinned tuna will be among those matched to Aldi prices. Shoppers can identify eligible products by looking for the distinctive Aldi Price Match logo in stores.
CEO Statement
Tesco UK CEO Ashwin Prasad emphasized the company's commitment to affordability: "We know that household budgets are again under pressure, but we are committed to keeping the cost of the weekly food shop affordable for Tesco customers. By extending our Aldi Price Match scheme to Express stores we can now give customers the confidence that they can get great prices on a range of everyday products at Tesco, whether that’s in our large stores, online or in more than 2,000 of our local convenience stores."
Consumer Impact
The expansion comes amid new research revealing that 85% of UK adults are now worried about food prices, up from 83% in February. This concern is driving lifestyle changes, with two-thirds (67%) of households making at least one adjustment to shopping or eating habits in the last month to reduce spending. Common adjustments include buying cheaper products (43%), opting for more supermarket own budget-range items (37%), and purchasing extra items on promotion (31%).
Alarmingly, Which? found that one in seven (15%) UK households report going without some foods, and one in ten (approximately three million households) are skipping meals to keep their weekly shop affordable. The Tesco price match expansion is expected to provide much-needed relief for these households.
