Oil stains, often among the most stubborn marks on clothing, can be effectively removed in just 15 minutes using two common kitchen staples. Cleaning expert Chantel Mila, known as Mama Mila on TikTok, shared this simple yet powerful method in November 2025.
Why Oil Stains Are Difficult
Oil-based stains are notoriously hard to clean because as the oil oxidises, it becomes sticky and sets into the fabric. Its tendency to spread further complicates removal. However, with the right approach, these stains can be eliminated without harsh chemicals.
The Two-Ingredient Solution
To tackle oil stains, you only need baking soda and washing up liquid. Begin by laying the stained garment flat with the mark facing upward. Apply a small amount of washing up liquid directly onto the stain, enough to cover it. Then, generously sprinkle baking soda over the liquid.
Using a small bristled brush, gently work the two ingredients together to form a paste. Allow this paste to sit on the stain for 15 minutes. After the waiting period, wash the garment on its regular cycle. The oil stain should disappear completely.
How It Works
Baking soda acts as an absorbent, drawing the oil out of the fabric. Washing up liquid breaks down the grease, cutting through the stain before washing. This combination ensures both absorption and breakdown of the oil.
Experts at Tide recommend acting quickly on oil stains. If there is excess oil, dab it with a paper towel before applying the paste.
Caution for Coloured Fabrics
Be careful when using this hack on dark or coloured clothes. Baking soda can cause fading or discolouration, especially on sensitive fabrics like wool, cashmere, or silk. Its high pH level may damage protein-based fibres and affect pH-sensitive dyes. Although baking soda is not bleach, it can have a bleaching effect on some coloured fabrics.
Always test on an inconspicuous area first. For best results, use this method on white or colourfast materials.
