Northumberland Man Wins £1m on Lottery, Plans New Home

A man from Northumberland has become a millionaire after winning £1,000,000 on The National Lottery EuroMillions Millionaire Maker. He secured the prize during the special 10 UK Millionaire Maker event held on Friday, May 1, 2026.

The fortunate winner purchased his ticket online specifically for the event, believing he had a good chance of becoming one of the guaranteed new millionaires. He now intends to use his winnings to buy a new home and has promised to treat his friends to a round of coffees in celebration.

Speaking about his win, he said: "I fancied my chances on the 10 UK Millionaire Maker event, so I bought a ticket. I couldn't believe it when I realised that I had actually won! This means that my life can totally change and I can look forward to an amazing future in my own home."

Abbie Suddick, winners' advisor at Allwyn, operator of The National Lottery, congratulated the Northumberland-based prize winner. She said: "Congratulations to our lucky Northumberland winner. What a wonderful way to become a millionaire and through the special Millionaire Maker event, too! We wish him all the best with finding his new home."

How to Play the National Lottery

Players can buy and check their tickets online by downloading the National Lottery app or visiting national-lottery.co.uk. Tickets can also be purchased and checked in retail stores. Playing online via the app or website ensures your ticket is checked, and you receive an email notification if you win a prize. You can also scan your retail tickets on the National Lottery app to check if you are a winner.

Contribution to Good Causes

Playing any National Lottery game is more than just a chance to win; it is a way to contribute to something much bigger, Allwyn says. Each week, players help generate around £33 million for National Lottery-funded projects. With over £53 billion raised for Good Causes since launch, this funds hundreds of projects in every postcode area across the UK. From supporting the arts and sport sectors to empowering local community groups and preserving iconic British landmarks, players' participation makes a difference every single day.

Changes to Lotto

Lotto now offers players two chances to win for every £2 line. The twice-weekly Lotto draws, held every Wednesday and Saturday evening at 8pm, follow a two-round format with two sets of six main numbers and a bonus ball drawn using two separate machines. This means players can win in one round, the other, or both, all from a single Lotto line. Players do not need to make any changes and will continue to pick six numbers from 59 balls.

Following this change, jackpots will continue to start at £2 million and can roll over up to five times before a must-be-won draw on the sixth. Players will still win a prize when they match two or more main numbers in a single round. There will still be two ways to become a millionaire: either by matching all six main numbers to win a jackpot prize of at least £1 million, or by matching five main numbers plus the bonus ball to secure a fixed £1 million prize. The jackpot will be shared across both rounds, while all other prize tiers will continue to offer fixed cash prizes, paid per round.

In addition, the Lotto HotPicks add-on game has also moved to the new two-round format and will continue to be priced at £1. The updated game is expected to more than double the number of Lotto millionaires – from around 140 a year to about 345 – while the odds of winning a prize will improve from 1-in-9.3 to 1-in-4.9, operator Allwyn said.
