A man in his 50s allegedly set fire to a cafe counter and himself after staff refused to serve mayonnaise with his sandwich. The incident occurred at Las Postas cafe in Los Palacios y Villafranca, near Seville, on Wednesday evening.
According to Spanish media, the man requested mayonnaise or ketchup for his shredded beef sandwich. When told the pre-made sandwiches did not include condiments, he left the cafe, returning moments later with petrol. CCTV footage shows him splashing fuel on the counter and igniting it, partially catching his own clothes on fire.
The man briefly walked away, stamping out flames on his clothing, while a staff member used a fire extinguisher to douse the blaze. Civil Guard officers arrested him nearby shortly after the 7:00pm attack. He was treated for burns and is due in court on Friday.
Cafe owner José Antonio Caballero expressed disbelief, stating: 'The fact that, simply because we don't have any mayonnaise or ketchup, a man goes so crazy as to set fire to a cafe seems mind-boggling.' Local reports estimate the damage at £7,000.
