A popular TikTok creator has sparked delight and debate by crafting a unique homemade version of the iconic Terry's Chocolate Orange, using real segments of citrus fruit.
The Viral Kitchen Experiment
Content creator Paige, who runs the account @paigebakedthat, shared a video demonstrating her process for making a Terry's Chocolate Orange bar from scratch. With a combined following of 47,000 on TikTok and Instagram, Paige is known for her kitchen experiments. In the video description, she wrote: "I’m not sure we all wished a Terry's Chocolate Orange bar was made of real orange, but I did and I made one."
Inspired by the classic treat, Paige explained her thought process: "When I saw the Terry's bar I immediately thought, what if a Terry's Chocolate Orange bar was made with real orange?" She peeled a citrus fruit, removed the white pith, and used a shop-bought bar as a template to match the segment count.
A Fiddly But Rewarding Process
The meticulous method involved carefully melting the chocolate from a Terry's Chocolate Orange, loosening it with a little oil, and individually dipping each fruit segment. After removing excess chocolate, she painstakingly arranged the coated pieces to form the bar's distinctive shape. "This had to be my favourite part, it was so fiddly but well worth it," she said in the video.
Paige kept the front pieces bearing the Terry's logo from the original bar and attached them to her creation. She finished by adding extra chocolate down the centre to secure it, before letting it set in the fridge for several hours. The result was a chocolate orange bar made with real fruit.
Citrus Controversy Erupts Online
The video prompted a surprisingly heated discussion in the comments, with many viewers disputing the type of fruit used. One commenter insisted: "That's NOT an orange. That's a tangerine, mandarin, clementine... but that is not an orange." Paige responded with an orange emoji, but the debate continued.
According to nutritional sources like Healthline, while tangerines, mandarins, and clementines are all citrus fruits, they are not technically varieties of orange. When asked how her creation tasted, Paige simply replied: "I really like it... personally."
The original Terry's Chocolate Orange was first produced in York in 1932. Production later moved to various European sites before being consolidated in Strasbourg, France, in 2018. Interestingly, before the chocolate orange's success, the company sold a chocolate apple, and briefly launched a chocolate lemon in 1979, which was withdrawn after just three years.
