Experts have issued a warning about common items packed in hand luggage that could cause travel disruptions. While many travellers pack essentials like headphones, snacks, and travel documents, skincare products such as lip balm, lotion, facial mist, and face masks are also popular. However, experts caution that packing certain skincare items can lead to significant airport delays or even confiscation if passengers are unaware of restrictions.
Skincare Products and Liquid Rules
According to experts at Landys Chemist, one of the most common errors is assuming that some products do not count as liquids. Newer skincare items like balms, jellies, and sticks can be confusing. However, sheet masks, eye patches, cleansing balms, face creams, and serums are all treated as liquids at security and must be packed accordingly. Failure to do so may result in confiscation and delays.
Overpacking Travel Minis
Even travel-size skincare under the liquid allowance can cause issues if not packed correctly. Some airports require all liquids to fit into a single, fully sealed, clear bag. Splitting liquids across multiple bags or presenting them poorly can prompt extra screening, leading to unnecessary delays.
Unlabelled Containers
Decanting products into unlabelled bottles is another mistake. Unlabelled containers can raise questions and lead to manual checks, wasting time at security.
Pressurised Sprays
Facial mists, setting sprays, and spray sunscreens are pressurised and more likely to be pulled aside for inspection, causing delays. Travellers should check liquid rules for their departure airport, as some UK airports have ditched the 100ml rule while others maintain it.
Rhysa Phommachanh, skincare expert at Landys Chemist, advises: "Many travellers pack full skincare routines in hand luggage, but it can be confusing. As a general rule, if a product can be spread, rubbed, or sprayed, it usually falls under liquid restrictions. For long-haul flights, a simplified approach with lip balm, lightweight moisturiser, or facial mist is often sufficient to maintain hydration without irritating the skin."
