Major US Supermarket Issues Urgent Allergy Alert for Yogurt

A leading American grocery chain has initiated an urgent product recall after discovering a potentially life-threatening undeclared allergen in one of its yogurts. PlantBased Innovations is recalling its strawberry-flavoured Higher Harvest by H-E-B Dairy-Free Coconut Yogurt because it may contain almonds not listed on the label.

Details of the Recall and Product Information

The recall was announced by the company in a notice shared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday. It was triggered by a customer complaint which found that yogurt containing almond had been distributed in packaging that did not declare its presence.

The affected products were distributed to H-E-B grocery stores on 24 November 2025 and sent to the chain's distribution centres and retail stores across Texas. The yogurt is sold in 5.3-ounce plastic cups with foil lids and carries a best-by date of 2 January 2026, printed on the bottom of the container.

While no illnesses have been reported to date, the FDA warns that almonds are a major food allergen. For individuals with an allergy, consumption can cause reactions ranging from hives to severe, life-threatening anaphylaxis.

Consumer Advice and Wider Recall Context

The company has urged consumers with an almond allergy or sensitivity not to eat the product. Customers can return the recalled yogurts to their place of purchase for a full refund.

This incident is part of a wider trend of food recalls in the United States linked to allergy risks. Earlier in December, Suzanna’s Kitchen recalled approximately 62,550 pounds of chicken products due to undeclared soy. In November, Silvestri Sweets Inc. recalled Choceur Holiday Bark chocolates sold at Aldi after a packaging mix-up meant some bars contained undeclared pecans or wheat.

In the UK, similar vigilance is required, with supermarkets like Tesco having recently recalled products such as Christmas cupcakes over undeclared milk allergens. Consumers are always advised to check packaging carefully and report any concerns.
