Britons are being urged to search through their loose change as a particular 50p coin from 2023 could be worth a small fortune. According to numismatic experts, this specific coin might fetch an easy £100 on the collector's market.
The Crown Jewels of Circulation
The Royal Mint has officially declared the 2023 Atlantic Salmon 50p as the rarest 50p coin currently in circulation. This coin was produced as part of a special collection commemorating the coronation of King Charles III.
Featuring an Atlantic Salmon on its reverse side and the new portrait of King Charles on the obverse, this coin's value comes from its extreme scarcity. Only 200,000 of these coins were ever manufactured and released into circulation through UK banks and Post Offices.
Dethroning a Legend
This development marks a significant shift in the world of coin collecting. The Atlantic Salmon 50p has now overtaken the famous 2009 Kew Gardens 50p, which had held the title of rarest circulating 50p for fifteen years.
The Kew Gardens coin had a mintage of 210,000, making the Atlantic Salmon edition even scarcer with 10,000 fewer coins in existence. In a viral TikTok video, an expert known as the Coin Collecting Wizard confirmed: "You can sell this coin for an easy £100 right now."
Current Market Value and Availability
At the time of reporting, collectors are actively seeking this rare find. Examples of the Atlantic Salmon 50p have appeared on online marketplaces with impressive price tags. Listings on eBay show asking prices of £146.29 and £149.50 for this coveted coin.
The Royal Mint stated on its website: "His Majesty King Charles III's 50p coin has been officially crowned as the rarest 50p in active circulation, following the latest mintage figures published by The Royal Mint."
With such limited numbers released and high demand from collectors, finding one of these coins in your everyday change could indeed turn 50p into a substantial profit. The hunt is officially on for Britain's new numismatic crown jewel.
