Harry Maguire has admitted he would 'love' to stay at Manchester United but insists he needs guarantees over his playing time before signing a new deal. The 33-year-old defender is out of contract this summer and has held talks with the club about extending his stay at Old Trafford.
United are reportedly keen to offer Maguire a one-year deal with an option for a further 12 months, while negotiations are also progressing with Kobbie Mainoo over a new contract. However, Maguire has made it clear that he will only commit if he believes he will remain a first-choice player throughout the contract.
Speaking about his future, Maguire said: 'I think we’ll reach an agreement where it’s best for the club and myself. What that agreement is, I’m sure you’ll find out over the next few weeks. But yeah, I think it’ll get sorted sooner rather than later, whether I stay or leave.'
The England international emphasised that sentiment alone would not be enough to keep him at the club. 'I love this club. But it’s got to be right for myself, it’s got to be right for the club as well. I don’t want to be staying on sentimental value,' he added.
Maguire stressed the importance of feeling valued and playing regularly. 'I want to be important to the club. So we need to sit down and speak,' he said. The defender is currently serving a suspension following a red card, giving him time to consider his options.
