Remember the early 00s utility trend? We all went crazy for camo trousers and Timberland boots. Well, it is back – but this time, it has got an elevated twist.

At its core, utility 2.0 is still all about practical fashion. But, instead of clumpy army-inspired getups, it has moved towards a more refined, quiet luxury aesthetic. Think sleek boilersuits, tailored cargo trousers and leather lace up boots, all in neutral beige and greens.

On the SS25 runways, funnel neck safari jackets were by far the most popular nod to the trend, with Burberry, Dior and Ferragamo all offering their own interpretations. Often featuring cinched waists and lots of oversized pockets, they are both flattering and practical.

Cargo pants also made an appearance at almost every show. At Tod's they came in chocolate leather, at Tommy Hilfiger they were cropped and at Brunello Cucinelli they were cut from a sheer organza.

The key to nailing the trend is to avoid anything too fussy. Stick to basics like rollnecks layered over shirts, or longline trenches draped over crewneck sweatshirts. Colours should also be pared back. Khaki, of course, taps into the utility trend perfectly, but beige, white and black also work.

If head-to-toe utility feels too much, the trend also looks great when contrasted with something ultra girly. Model Alexa Chung proved this perfectly when she stepped out at London Fashion Week earlier this year wearing a beige trench, khaki cargo trousers and metallic pink mule heels.

Top Tips for Wearing Utility 2.0

Balance Oversized with Fitted

The utility trend leans towards oversized silhouettes. If you are petite, this can look messy. Instead, balance baggy trousers and outerwear with fitted tees and shirts to give a little structure.

Add a Pop of Colour

Neutrals like khaki and beige tap into the utility trend. However, do not be afraid to add a little colour. Contrasting hues like cobalt blue or orange are great – add one small item (like a bag, scarf or shoe) for a welcome pop of colour.

Embrace Functionality

The utility trend is one of the few fashion trends that favours functionality! It is a great excuse to wear your oversized bags, comfy flats and cosy knits.
