Atletico Madrid have issued a stark warning to any club hoping to sign Julian Alvarez: the Argentina star will only depart if his world record release clause is triggered. Arsenal have been persistently linked with the forward, as Mikel Arteta seeks to bolster his attacking lineup this summer.
Interest from Spanish Giants
The Gunners are not alone in their pursuit. Both Real Madrid and Barcelona are reportedly monitoring the situation, with Real Madrid having already seen a €150 million bid rejected by Atletico.
President Cerezo's Statement
Atletico president Enrique Cerezo spoke to El Desmarque, stating: “Julian is an Atletico Madrid player. Whoever wants him can come and look at the contract (the buyout clause), and if they’re interested, they’ll sign him; if not, they won’t. It seems like this is the story of the summer; you all know exactly how things stand.”
Cerezo expressed confidence that no club would meet the £431 million (€500 million) clause, adding: “Julian is an Atlético Madrid player, and I believe he will remain an Atletico Madrid player.”
Alvarez's Record at Atletico
Alvarez, 26, joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 and has netted 49 goals in 106 appearances for the Spanish side. His impressive form has made him a target for top clubs across Europe.
Real Madrid's Rejected Bid
Cerezo’s comments come a week after Real Madrid confirmed their €150 million offer was turned down. A statement from Real Madrid read: “Following the meeting of the board of directors held today, it has made an offer of 150 million euros to Club Atletico de Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julian Alvarez. After reviewing and evaluating the offer, Club Atletico de Madrid has expressed its gratitude for the proposal, made within the framework of the good relations between both clubs, and has rejected it, referring to the player's release clause.”
Atletico responded with a series of sarcastic posts on social media, including jibes about Real Madrid’s academy poaching and a reference to the Pope’s fandom.
