Despite most Britons acknowledging that food tastes superior when consumed in its natural season, a significant majority do not incorporate this knowledge into their shopping habits, new research has disclosed.
Widespread Ignorance on Seasonal Eating
A staggering 77% of Brits lack awareness of which fruits and vegetables grow at specific times of the year. This confusion persists even though 83% agree that produce is more flavourful at its seasonal peak. According to figures from Yeo Valley Organic, merely 8% of shoppers verify whether items are in season before making their grocery purchases.
The findings underscore a general bewilderment surrounding seasonal produce. For instance, only 24% of individuals correctly identified the season for strawberries. Meanwhile, many erroneously believe that tomatoes (40%) and apples (36%) are naturally in season during spring.
In reality, UK spring produce typically includes asparagus, broad beans, cabbage, and leeks.
A Taste of the Countryside in the City
With many consumers seeking fresher, more natural, and flavourful foods at this time of year, Yeo Valley Organic is celebrating the season by introducing a unique mini meadow in central London. This small patch of paradise features genuine Somerset pasture, inviting visitors to decelerate, relax, and "graze" among the grass while sampling delicious, free-range organic milk — which is naturally pure.
Verity Richardson from Yeo Valley Organic commented: "Spring is when everything comes back to life on the farm. Our cows are out grazing on lush, organic pastures, full of natural diversity. We know many people want to eat more seasonally, but it’s not always easy to know where to start.
"By bringing a little piece of the Yeo Valley Organic founding farm from Somerset to the middle of London, we’re helping people reconnect with where their food comes from and experience just how good milk can taste when it’s produced in harmony with the seasons."
The Yeo Valley Organic meadow will be in London on May 21 at Reuters Plaza, Canary Wharf Estate, London, E14 5AJ.
