Parents Urged to Use Summer Savings Scheme to Save Hundreds
Summer Savings Scheme: Parents Can Save Hundreds

The government has launched its new Great British Summer Savings scheme to help parents struggling with the cost of entertaining children during the six-week summer break. One mum, Hannah, urged parents to take advantage of the scheme, which she says could save hundreds of pounds on days out and travel.

Free Bus Travel Across England

From August 1 to 31, children aged five to 15 can travel on participating bus services across England completely free. No advance tickets or sign-ups are necessary. "Just hop on a bus and go," Hannah added.

Discounted Theme Park Tickets

Participating parks include Thorpe Park, Chessington World of Adventures Resort, Alton Towers and Legoland, offering discounted tickets as part of the scheme. The VAT on tickets has been reduced from 20% to 5% throughout the summer holidays.

Cinema and Eating Out Deals

Family-friendly films have lower ticket prices, though the scheme does not cover popcorn or drinks. Parents are allowed to take their own snacks. Many local and chain restaurants offer kids-eat-free meals and meals for just £1 with an adult purchase.

How to Find Offers

Visit the Great British Summer Savings website at https://summersavings.gov.uk, enter your postcode, adjust the distance dial, optionally search by attraction or food type, and click 'Find offers'. Over 1,700 businesses' offers are available, and the government is encouraging more to join.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, said: "Thanks to our tax cuts, families will be able to enjoy more of the little treats and days out that make the British summer holidays so special. Our new website will make it easier for them to take advantage of Great British Summer Savings and help afford the moments that matter."
