Sunderland have completed the signing of experienced Belgium right-back Thomas Meunier on a two-year deal, the club announced on Wednesday. The 34-year-old arrives as a free agent after his contract at Lille expired, becoming the club's first summer signing as Régis Le Bris's side prepares for a second consecutive Premier League season alongside a Europa League campaign.
Meunier's excitement and career highlights
“I’m hugely excited and honoured to join Sunderland,” said Meunier. “When I spoke with the club I was impressed by the ambition, the project and the desire to keep moving forward. Competing in Europe was also a big factor in my decision. I hope I can bring my experience to the squad, both on and off the pitch.”
Meunier has earned 83 caps for Belgium and recently returned from the World Cup. His career includes successful stints at Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, where he made 43 Champions League appearances and 33 Europa League appearances. Standing at 6ft 3in, he offers a blend of physical presence and attacking threat from right-back.
Impact on Sunderland's squad
Meunier is likely to compete with Northern Ireland's Trai Hume for the right-back position. His arrival may also allow Nordi Mukiele to move from full-back to centre-back, providing more defensive options for Le Bris. Sunderland will balance domestic duties with European competition, making squad depth crucial for the upcoming season.
