Channel 4 News Interrupted: Starmer Told to Set Departure Timetable
Starmer Told to Set Departure Timetable on Live TV

Channel 4 News was interrupted for a major alert as Prime Minister Keir Starmer was reportedly told to set a timetable for his departure. The bulletin came from outside Number 10 Downing Street, where political editor Gary Gibbon detailed the internal government turmoil.

Pressure Mounts on Starmer

Gary Gibbon reported that chief whip Jonathan Reynolds had spoken to Starmer, not for the first time, and instructed him to arrange a schedule for stepping down. The journalist noted that some conversations could extend into the weekend, describing the atmosphere inside the building as one of real anguish.

Gibbon added that Starmer has been so angered by Andy Burnham's challenge that he has considered resigning his parliamentary seat. This would trigger a by-election during his departure, creating what Gibbon described as an awkward opening for a potential Burnham administration.

Burnham's By-Election Victory

Burnham recently won the by-election in Makerfield. Despite calls for his resignation, Starmer has stated he will fight to retain his position as Prime Minister. Burnham is expected to launch a leadership bid, while Starmer has told media he does not plan to walk away following Burnham's victory.

At a rally before his Makerfield win, Burnham told attendees that a new Labour leader could create space for the real change that constituents deserve. However, Starmer argued that a leadership contest would plunge the party into chaos and urged unity for the upcoming by-election to replace Burnham as Greater Manchester Mayor.

Starmer told reporters: There isn't a leadership contest at the moment, but as I've said many times, I don't think that would be good for the country, to plunge us into chaos. I would also add that now Andy has won, which is really important, there will inevitably be a Manchester mayoralty by-election starting straight away. It's important that we pull together for that, but if there is a contest, then yes, I will run.
