Newcastle United have confirmed that teenage winger Antonio Cordero has left the club to re-join Spanish Segunda Division side Cadiz on a season-long loan deal. Chronicle Live reported earlier this week that a 'swift agreement' had been reached between the two clubs, despite interest from other Spanish sides, after Cordero made it known his wish was to return to his hometown club.
Cordero's Previous Spell at Cadiz
The Magpies winger made 21 appearances and scored three goals in his first spell with Cadiz, and it is believed Newcastle are covering a significant portion of his wages. A club statement read: "Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Antonio well for the season ahead." The 19-year-old is set to join back up with the squad and meet the club's new president Christian Septien ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Rare Paul Mitchell Signing
Cordero joined Newcastle last July from Malaga, having scored six goals and registered seven assists in his first season in senior football. Speaking about his move at the time, Cordero said: "It's truly an honour to be here, truly a pleasure. I am a person who likes to aspire high. Why not come to one of the best places in the world to do it? It's a big step, and that's one of the reasons I'm here. I'm happy to do it and have a great desire to get going already." He was one of the very few signings made under former sporting director Paul Mitchell, who described Cordero as an 'exciting talent' with 'a lot of potential'.
Loan to Westerlo and Return to Spain
Cordero was immediately shipped out on loan to Belgian side Westerlo, but he struggled to make an impact in the Jupiler League, making just eight appearances before returning to Tyneside. His return to Spain with Cadiz reinvigorated his career, and the opportunity to work under Cadiz manager Imanol Idiakez, who made him a fundamental part of his plans last season, was a key driver behind his desire to return to the Andalusian club.
