Manchester United have informed Newcastle United that they do not plan to sign Sandro Tonali this summer because of his £100million price tag. The Red Devils had been monitoring the Italian midfielder's situation but have now directly told Newcastle they will not pursue a deal, believing the combined cost of the transfer fee and wage demands to be prohibitive.
Newcastle Brace for Tonali Exit
Newcastle have long been preparing for Tonali's potential departure this summer. The sourcing of a replacement has featured prominently in their transfer planning since the spring. The Italian joined the Magpies in 2023 from AC Milan, a remarkable coup as they returned to the Champions League. Alongside Bruno Guimaraes, Tonali formed one of the Premier League's most formidable midfield partnerships.
Tonali endured a 10-month ban due to gambling violations, but Newcastle stood firmly behind him and have reaped the rewards. However, speculation grew last season over his desire to move on, particularly after the club fell short of European qualification.
Tottenham and Arsenal Show Interest
Tottenham have emerged as an unexpected suitor, with manager Roberto de Zerbi said to be especially keen. Arsenal also have genuine interest, buoyed by their Premier League triumph. The Gunners already boast Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi among their midfield options but are equally keen to strengthen their attacking ranks.
Newcastle have been under no illusions that Tonali could move on. Key figures at St James' Park have anticipated his departure for months, with recruitment meetings focused on identifying suitable replacements.
Manchester City Could Make Move
Manchester City could yet enter the race as they embark on a new chapter following Pep Guardiola's departure. They are seeking a long-term successor to Rodri, and it remains to be seen whether they pursue a deal for Elliot Anderson, with the potential transfer now touted at £120million.
Newcastle, however, will not allow Tonali to depart cheaply. Their valuation sits at around £100million. Their urgency to offload another prized asset has been eased by their decision to sanction Anthony Gordon's move to Barcelona for £70million.
Manchester United, despite their pressing need to bolster midfield, will not join the race. Ederson is poised to join from Atalanta, while West Ham's Mateus Fernandes is another top target.
