Manchester City are targeting Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi, with the 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder valued at around £85m (€100m). The club's next midfield acquisition will provide clarity on the futures of Rodri and Elliot Anderson, according to chief Manchester City writer Simon Bajkowski.
Bouaddi as Rodri's Successor
Bouaddi, who made his Lille debut at 16 in 2023 and has over 100 senior appearances, is seen as a long-term replacement for Rodri. City prefer a handover period, similar to when Fernandinho stayed for Rodri's first three seasons, even displacing him in the 2021 Champions League run. If Bouaddi signs, having both players for at least a year would push Anderson higher up the pitch.
Alternative Path with Enzo Fernandez
If City walk away from Bouaddi and pursue Enzo Fernandez, that would suggest Anderson is being groomed as Rodri's successor in the deeper role he plays for England. City have distanced themselves from Fernandez, but links persist due to his ties to manager Enzo Maresca.
Market Realities
Chelsea's £117m move for Morgan Rogers highlights the premium for midfielders. City already paid a significant sum for Anderson. Unless sporting director Hugo Viana finds a cheaper alternative, another major investment is needed to strengthen the midfield as desired.
