Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil has made it clear that the club will not sell star striker Julian Alvarez for any price, even £170m, in a move that could frustrate Manchester City's hopes of a transfer windfall.
City's sell-on clause at risk
Manchester City inserted a 10% sell-on clause on any profit from Alvarez's transfer when they sold him to Atletico in 2023 for a club-record fee exceeding £81m with add-ons. If Atletico sold Alvarez for £120m, City would receive around £4m; a £160m sale would net roughly £8m. However, Gil's强硬 stance means City may receive nothing.
Gil's unlimited refusal
In a video posted to Atletico's social media, Gil said: “My opinion is clear, the club's will is clear... We don't want to transfer him; we won't accept the €100million offer, nor will we accept one for €150million or €200 million (£170million).” He emphasized that Atletico considers Alvarez the perfect striker and wants to keep him.
Alvarez's rising value
Alvarez, now 26, has impressed in La Liga and is a key player for Argentina, which is one game away from winning back-to-back World Cups. Arsenal and Barcelona have shown interest, and a move would be Alvarez's preference, but Atletico remain resolute.
