Death in Paradise Star Unrecognisable in New BBC Comedy

Danny John-Jules, best known for his role as Officer Dwayne Myers in the BBC crime drama Death in Paradise, has made a surprising appearance in a new BBC comedy series, Ann Droid. The actor, who was an original cast member of Death in Paradise from its first season in 2011, appears in episode two of the six-part series, looking markedly different from his beloved character.

Ann Droid: A New Comedy About AI and Loneliness

Ann Droid follows the story of Sue, a lonely widower played by Sue Johnston. Her son Michael, portrayed by Paul Ready, decides to buy her an AI eldercare robot named Linda (voiced by Diane Morgan) to keep her company and ensure her safety. However, Sue initially rejects the robot, making it clear she does not want it in her home. Over the course of the series, an unlikely bond forms between Sue and Linda as the show explores themes of loneliness, grief, the clash between humanity and technology, and ageing.

The first episode aired on Friday, July 17, but all episodes are available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Danny John-Jules appears in episode two.

Danny John-Jules' Cameo as Taxi Driver Brian

In episode two, Sue bumps into her friend Eileen, played by Kathryn Hunter, who is waiting for a taxi to take her to her aunt's 108th birthday party. The taxi driver who arrives is Brian, played by Danny John-Jules. Brian's car looks worse for wear, and Sue points out the danger. Eileen reassures Sue, saying Brian has been driving her for over 40 years. Brian quips, 'And I've only been sober for the last five!' Later, Brian drops Eileen back to meet Sue and Linda. Before leaving, he asks for customer reviews, joking, 'Preferably ones above the two stars I'm getting at the moment. Would you mind? Oh, and don't mention I got lost and had four pints at lunch or that I ran out of petrol and we had to walk the last 2km, ok?'

Danny John-Jules' Death in Paradise Legacy

Danny John-Jules was a fan favourite on Death in Paradise, playing Officer Dwayne Myers for seven years from 2011 until his departure in 2018. He later reprised the role in the Christmas special in 2024, marking his last appearance to date. Although he handed in his badge at the end of his original stint, fans remain hopeful he might return in a future series. Ann Droid is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
