Arsenal's Premier League title defence faces an early test as a defensive crisis emerges. William Saliba could be sidelined for up to five months due to back surgery, according to L'Equipe. The defender has reportedly been managing pain with medication and was forced off during France's World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain.
This injury casts a new light on Arsenal's reported interest in Dinos Mavropanos. The former Arsenal defender, now at West Ham, was named the club's player of the season last year. Following West Ham's relegation, he could be available for around £25 million. However, Borussia Dortmund and Leeds United are also monitoring the situation.
Saliba's Surgery and Impact
Saliba's back problems have been a concern for some time. He was seen receiving treatment during matches last season. The surgery could keep him out for a significant portion of the campaign, leaving Arsenal short at centre-back. Mikel Arteta may need to act quickly in the transfer market.
Mbemba Chooses Paris FC
Arsenal's pursuit of PSG teenager Emmanuel Mbemba has ended. The 18-year-old, who captained PSG's under-18 side, has opted to join Paris FC instead. He can play at left-back or central defence and featured in the UEFA Youth League. Paris FC sporting director Marco Neppe said: "We are delighted that he has chosen our project. Emmanuel is a modern and talented left-footed defender. He already has numerous caps for the French youth national teams."
Mbemba had interest from Arsenal and AS Monaco but chose the project at Paris FC. Arsenal will now look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements.
Transfer Activity So Far
Arsenal have already completed some business this summer. Goalkeeper Illan Meslier joined as backup, and Piero Hincapie's loan from Bayer Leverkusen was made permanent for £34.5 million. That fee has been largely recouped by the sales of Karl Hein, Jakub Kiwior, and Leandro Trossard. Trossard, who contributed key goals last season, will need replacing.
The club is also monitoring other targets as they look to strengthen the squad for the title defence. With Saliba's injury, a centre-back signing has become a priority.
