World Cup Final Delay Fears as New York Hit by Flash Floods

New York has been struck by severe flash flooding just hours before the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, raising concerns that the match could face delays due to travel disruption. Roads have come to a standstill, with vehicles submerged and even fire engines trapped in the floodwaters.

Flooding Chaos Hits New York

The flash flooding began on July 18 and has continued into the day of the final, with images and video showing traffic at a standstill across the area. Cars attempting to cross the floodwater have become stranded, and some have been completely submerged. The New York New Jersey Stadium, where the final is scheduled to kick off at 8pm UK time, has not been directly affected, but access routes have been severely disrupted.

Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart was among those caught in the heavy rainfall, posting images of the conditions on social media. Fire engines have also been seen struggling in the Queens area, unable to navigate the flooded streets.

Previous Concerns Over Relocation

Earlier concerns had been raised that FIFA might relocate the World Cup final due to player welfare issues, but those were related to wildfires in Canada, not the weather. Thick smoke from Canadian wildfires blanketed New York on July 17, leading to poor air quality. Despite this, FIFA had no plans to move the match, even after US President Donald Trump weighed in, accusing Canada of “willful negligence” over its forest management and claiming the US was being “unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air.”

The current flash flooding adds a new layer of uncertainty, but as of now, the final is still scheduled to proceed as planned. Authorities are urging fans to allow extra travel time and to avoid flooded areas.
