Scotland's yellow wind warning is set to end at 9pm on Tuesday, October 27, with high pressure expected to bring calmer conditions from Wednesday, according to the Met Office.
Scots have been battered by wind and rain over the past few days, with gusts up to 70mph expected in the far north and northwest of Scotland. The Met Office has warned that the spell of strong winds could bring "damaging gusts and transport disruption."
Timing of the Warning
The yellow wind warning began at 3am on Tuesday, October 27, and is set to end at 9pm. It spans from the Shetland Islands to the Scottish Borders. Parts of south west Scotland and Strathclyde had already been hit by gales from Monday evening at 6pm, with that warning ending at 3am before expanding into the full warning.
Scots in coastal areas are being urged to stay safe as large waves may occur. The weekend saw flooding, travel disruption and power cuts as Scotland experienced the tailwind of Storm Austen and the full brunt of Storm Boelo since Friday, October 23.
Calmer Weather Ahead
Met Office deputy chief forecaster Steven Keates said: "While the start of this week will be notably wet and windy, high pressure is expected to bring a quieter spell of weather later in the week."
From Wednesday, high pressure will start to build, easing winds and bringing a quieter and largely drier end to the week for many, although some rain is still possible in the north and west. Keates added: "However, with wind warnings in place, those in warning areas, particularly in northern Scotland and western high ground continue to be exposed to strong winds and heavy rain before the more settled weather arrives."
Forecast for the Rest of the Week
While winds are expected to ease for most on Wednesday, those in the far north of Scotland may still experience gales for a time, which could continue the coastal flooding risk in some areas. Thursday is expected to be largely dry with lighter winds, but Scots can expect cloud and light, patchy rain going into Halloween weekend.
On the evening of October 31, temperatures are expected to sit at highs of 10C in the central belt and Grampian, while Wick and Portee will be slightly cooler at 7C. Weather maps are currently predicting scattered showers over Dumfries and the Scottish Borders at 6pm before clearing southwards.
