The Met Office has issued a fresh yellow weather warning for wind covering 42 areas across parts of Northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, with some coastal and exposed locations expected to see gusts of 70mph or more.
The warning is in place from 3am to midnight on Tuesday, following a weekend of wild weather in which Storm Boelo left two people dead and 160,000 homes without power. Storms Austen and Boelo brought gusts of more than 80mph and torrential downpours across large parts of the country within three days.
What the warning means
Britons are warned to expect travel disruption, damage to buildings and a risk of injuries from flying debris, with a small chance of danger to life. The Met Office said: "Gusts of 50-60mph are possible quite widely and some coastal or exposed areas could see gusts of 70mph or more, but at this time there is some uncertainty in where, and how strong, the peak gusts will be."
Heavy winds are also threatening to leave homes without power, with those in the affected areas urged to prepare an emergency kit containing torches, batteries, mobile phone power packs and other essentials. People in coastal areas should "be aware of large waves," as "even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea," the Met Office added.
Flood warnings and forecast
The Environment Agency issued 10 flood warnings, with a further 64 areas warned that flooding is possible. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency said four flood warnings and 11 flood alerts were in place.
Heavy rain and winds are set to continue battering parts of the UK today, the Met Office said. Meteorologist Alex Burkill said that while conditions are expected to improve on Monday, more rain and wind will arrive on Tuesday. "There are more heavy rain and strong winds to come because of a deepening area of low pressure – another one – which is heading towards us," he said. "All be it, this low doesn’t look as deep or is coming quiet as close as Boelo did."
The Met Office forecast for today reads: "On Monday rain will sweep northeast across the UK, with strengthening winds bringing gales in the west later. After a cold start for some, it will feel increasingly mild in the west."
Weekend impact
Over the weekend, a 60-year-old man was killed by a falling tree in Dumfries, Scotland, while another man in his 20s died after a tree struck him while he was in a moving car in Finchley.
