Balmoral Castle has announced it will be closed today after a weather warning was issued to the public. The official Instagram account for the castle, located in Aberdeen, Scotland, shared a public warning about the temporary closure.
The post, shared on Tuesday, read: "Due to the weather warning in place for strong winds, Balmoral will be closed today (Tuesday 27th) for the safety of our visitors and team. If you have booked general admission, your ticket will be refunded, and if you have booked a tour, a member of staff will be in contact with you.
"We're sorry for any disappointment or inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding. Please take care if you are travelling in the area, and we look forward to welcoming you to Balmoral another time."
Yellow weather warning in place
This news comes after the Met Office said a yellow weather warning for strong winds and potentially damaging gusts is in place until 9pm on Tuesday for most of Scotland, including the entirety of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.
The continued extreme weather could hamper recovery efforts in some places after Storm Boelo battered the North of the UK over the weekend. It has not been revealed when Balmoral Castle will reopen.
Royal summer retreat
The castle, which is visited by thousands of people every year, is famous as the place where the royals retreat for their annual summer holiday. Hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla, the family gathers and stays at the castle together, enjoying quality time. The itinerary typically includes hikes, bike rides, barbecues, and picnics.
Among the royals who spend time there during the summer are the Prince and Princess of Wales and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. It is also known as the place where the late Queen Elizabeth II spent her final days and died peacefully on September 8, 2022.
Previous closure announcement
Balmoral Castle shared a public message on August 9 to announce its closure ahead of the royal summer break. They shared: "Balmoral Castle, including the grounds, gardens and exhibitions, is now closed to the public.
"Thank you to everyone who visited the Castle and Estate during the 2026 summer season. We hope you enjoyed your time at Balmoral and left with lasting memories of your visit.
"Until next time, keep an eye on our social media channels for updates, including the return of the Balmoral Castle Exclusively Highlands Artisan Market on 6, 7 and 8 November."
