Paisley, a charming Scottish town just seven miles west of Glasgow, has become a popular destination for those seeking respite from the UK's soaring summer temperatures. According to booking data from TrainPal, Scotland has seen a boom in train bookings as people flee the sweltering heat of southern England, where temperatures have reached up to 37°C.
Cooler Climate Attracts Visitors
Even in July, the hottest month of the year, temperatures in Paisley rarely exceed 25°C, making it an ideal spot to cool down. Alvaro Ungurean, Commercial Director Europe, Train Business Unit at TrainPal, noted: "Scotland is seeing a big surge in travel, not just because it’s a beautiful, domestic, summer escape, but because of its cooler climate. As UK summers continue to become warmer, we expect demand for 'cooler escapes' during the summer to keep growing, with rail making it easy for people to make the swap from the typically warmer Southern beach spots to Scotland’s beaches and lochs."
Historic Attractions
Paisley is a delightfully walkable area with a rich history. The first stop for many visitors is the 850-year-old Paisley Abbey. Inside, the grand stone interior and gorgeous architecture impress, but a highlight is the famous gargoyle added during 1990s renovations, carved in the likeness of the Xenomorph from the 1979 film Alien.
A short walk away, the Sma' Shot Cottages offer a glimpse into the town's past as a global textile producer. Paisley is the namesake of the iconic teardrop fabric pattern. The cottages serve as a museum of this textile history, featuring original weavers' looms and a foreman's home with rooms decorated to represent various time periods from the late 19th to early 20th century.
Growing Trend of Cooler Escapes
As southern England faces increasingly hot summers, destinations like Paisley are gaining popularity for their milder climates and cultural offerings. TrainPal's data highlights a significant shift in travel patterns, with more people opting for rail journeys to Scotland's beaches and lochs over traditional southern beach spots.
