Holiday from Hell: Fever in Corfu During Swine Flu Panic

In 2009, Sarah Ann Harris arrived in Corfu for a post-A-level girls' trip, but a fever triggered panic due to the swine flu pandemic. At passport control, heat-sensitive cameras showed her with a high temperature, leading to an immediate ambulance ride to hospital.

Hospital Ordeal

At the hospital, doctors struggled with a language barrier, and medical attempts left her with puncture wounds and a black bruise. The only English word from medics was “Oh shit!” She was left in a room without air conditioning, sweating through sheets and hallucinating.

Communication with Friends

Her friends tracked her down and communicated by shouting from the car park below her window. She had to take her own temperature and was given unidentified pills and injections, with used syringes left on her bedside table.

Discharge and Aftermath

After a few days, she was moved to a public ward and discharged with medical notes in Greek, never learning her diagnosis. She eventually reached the resort but had to stay in the shade, without the planned cocktails.
