Storm Boelo leaves hole in train roof as TfW reveals damage
Storm Boelo leaves hole in train roof, TfW confirms

Storm Boelo left a Transport for Wales train carriage with a hole in its roof and bent a gangway that connects carriages out of shape, the operator has revealed.

Transport for Wales said four trains sustained significant damage and five trains had tyre damage that needed repairs. A total of 33 trains struck or ran over branches that had been blown along the line.

Disruption on key routes

During the weekend, a number of services were cancelled or diverted because of trees on the tracks and flooding. Services between Cardiff Central and Bridgend or Swansea were disrupted due to flooding on the line near St Fagans.

On Sunday, the River Ely burst its banks between Cardiff Central and Pontyclun, meaning some services were cancelled and others were diverted through the Vale of Glamorgan.

Trains between Cardiff Central and Pontypridd were also cancelled for several hours due to a tree blocking the line, and services between Pontypridd and Abercynon were cancelled or delayed after an object became caught in the overhead electric wires.

Further cancellations and power cuts

Journeys along other routes were also not operating because more trains than expected required repairs. On Tuesday, strong winds were still causing disruption, with all Transport for Wales services suspended between Rhymney and Bargoed due to a fallen tree on the line at Brithdir.

Buses were forced to run instead of trains between Llandudno Junction and Blaenau Ffestiniog because of flooding.

In an online post on X, TfW wrote: "We know the disruption has affected journeys and travel plans, and we'd like to say a sincere thank you for your patience and understanding."

Over 800 homes in St Fagans, Drope, and St Nicholas were also left without power for several hours after the village was flooded on Sunday morning. Engineers from the National Grid restored power by 3pm.
