A major wildfire erupted on the slopes of Haytor on Dartmoor this afternoon, sending plumes of thick, acrid smoke billowing across the Devon countryside and forcing the emergency evacuation of tourists and holidaymakers.
Dramatic images and footage from the scene show orange flames tearing through the dry gorse and grassland, with a huge smoke cloud visible for miles around. The fire is reported to have started near the landmark Haytor Rocks, a popular destination for walkers and families.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service swiftly declared a major incident, mobilising a significant number of resources to battle the blaze. Multiple fire engines, including specialist off-road vehicles, were dispatched to the remote moorland location.
Authorities took immediate action to ensure public safety. A spokesperson for Dartmoor National Park confirmed that visitors were evacuated from the immediate area as a precautionary measure. The intense smoke, carried by the wind, posed a significant health risk and reduced visibility on nearby roads.
Fire crews are currently engaged in a protracted fight to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further across the protected landscape. The cause of the fire is not yet known and will be subject to investigation once the flames are extinguished.
Locals and visitors have been urged to avoid the area around Haytor to allow emergency services unhindered access. Those with respiratory conditions living downwind of the fire have been advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the poor air quality.
