A three-year-old child remains in critical condition following a violent storm that lifted a bounce house into the air before it crashed back to the ground in Montreal. The incident occurred Sunday afternoon when a thunderstorm swept through the Greater Montreal area.
Details of the Incident
Police received a call at 4:25 PM reporting that a children's inflatable castle had been blown away from Ouellette Park in the LaSalle borough, according to CTV News. Paramedics evaluated 11 people at the scene, and six were transported to the hospital, including four adults and two children. Officials believe the bounce house was lifted approximately 12 feet into the air before falling.
Witness Account
Witness Rosella Peluzzo, attending a church gathering in the park, described the chaotic scene. 'All of a sudden, we see this dark cloud coming towards us. A lot of wind came towards here, chairs started flying, tables started flying,' she told the outlet. 'I see the inflated house, and it went up high... It was just turning up in the air.' She added that once the inflatable hit the ground, people rushed to rescue trapped children. 'They were hurt, and I know that they were all sent to the Children's Hospital,' she said.
Official Response
LaSalle Mayor Nancy Blanchet expressed deep concern and support for those affected. 'I was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic accident that occurred late [Sunday] afternoon during a family gathering at Ouellette Park,' Blanchet said. The mayor noted that investigators are examining the incident and 'any necessary measures will be considered.' She added, 'Our entire community is deeply shaken by this serious accident. Please know that the safety of the public, particularly that of children, remains a priority.'
Weather Warnings
Environment and Climate Change Canada had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Montreal and nearby areas, cautioning of strong wind gusts, quarter-size hail, and heavy rain. The agency advised, 'Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail.'
In the neighbouring Mercier–Hochelaga–Maisonneuve borough, a large tree fell on at least two parked cars on Leclaire Street during the storm, though no injuries were reported.
