UK weather: -2C chill to hit in days - 24 counties affected

Large parts of the UK could be hit by bitterly cold weather in days as temperatures plunge to below freezing, new weather maps show. Chilly conditions will sweep several areas of the country on November 3, maps generated by WXCharts suggest, with around 24 counties across Scotland and England shivering in cold temperatures.

The shift in the weather pattern comes just days after the UK was battered by Storm Austen and Storm Boelo, leaving many Brits dealing with the aftermath of strong winds and heavy downpours.

Coldest conditions in Scotland

The bitterly cold conditions will begin to hit the country at around 6am on Tuesday (November 3), the maps have suggested. Most areas across Scotland will experience the coldest weather, with areas around Inverness shivering at lows of -2C.

Even areas around Yorkshire and Manchester could see the mercury drop to as low as 1C and 2C, the maps have suggested. Further south into northern England and northern Wales, many could still wake up to temperatures that plunge to as low as 1C and 2C, with lows of 4C possible in the North West and 5C in the Midlands, the maps suggest.

Temperatures across the rest of the UK

It may only be slightly warmer in London and the south coast, with the weather charts showing lows of 7C and 8C. The Met Office's long-range forecast between November 1 and 10 reads: "Pressure is set to build in the vicinity of the UK as we move into early November, with a lot of dry weather as a result."

"Cloud amounts will be quite variable with weak fronts bringing a focus of cloud, and possibly light rain at times, but there is no significant bias to where these are favoured."

"Within the high pressure, some places, perhaps more likely towards the east, will likely see overnight and morning fog, which at this time of year could take a while to clear and where it lingers, it will remain chilly."

Counties under 4C lows

According to the maps, the counties under lows of 4C are: Sutherland, Rossshire, Nairnshire, Morayshire, Banffshire, Aberdeenshire, Invernesshire, Perthshire, Argyllshire, Stirlingshire, Dumfriesshire, Ayrshire, Northumberland, Cumberland, Durham, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Shropshire, and Lincolnshire.

"Otherwise, temperatures generally fairly close to average for most during this period. Winds will generally be light, although stronger for the coastal north at times," the Met Office forecast adds.
