Met Office Issues Yellow Snow Warning for Scotland as Arctic Air Hits UK
UK Snow Warning: 30cm Forecast for Scotland

The Met Office has issued a significant yellow weather warning for snow and ice across the whole of northern Scotland, as a blast of Arctic air is set to bring a freezing start to 2026.

New Year Snow and Ice Warning Details

The warning is in effect from 1 January to 2 January 2026. Forecasters anticipate frequent and heavy snow showers, which are likely to cause considerable travel disruption. On the highest routes and hills, accumulations could reach up to 30 centimetres of snow.

The alert covers a vast area, including the following regions and local authorities: Central, Tayside and Fife, Grampian, Highlands and Eilean Siar, Orkney and Shetland, and Strathclyde.

Nationwide Freeze and Health Alert

This wintry hazard for Scotland is part of a broader cold snap affecting the entire United Kingdom. A plunge of Arctic air combined with strong northerly winds will bring cold or very cold conditions to all areas.

Widespread and locally severe frosts are expected. In response to the severe conditions, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has escalated its warnings. It has issued an amber cold health alert specifically for the north east and north west of England.

This alert highlights the increased health risks posed to vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions, during periods of extreme cold.

Potential Impacts and Travel Advice

Residents and travellers in the affected regions are urged to prepare for difficult conditions. The key risks associated with the Met Office yellow warning include:

  • Dangerous driving conditions due to icy patches and snow-covered roads.
  • Potential delays and cancellations to road, rail, and air travel.
  • Risk of injury from slips and falls on icy surfaces.
  • Possible interruptions to power supplies and other services.

Motorists are advised to check the latest forecasts and road conditions before setting out, and to ensure they have warm clothing, food, water, and a fully charged mobile phone for any journey.

As the UK prepares to ring in the New Year, the focus for many will shift to staying warm and safe amidst this significant wintry outbreak.
