UK Snow Forecast: 12 Counties Blanketed in Days

New weather maps suggest snow could spread across parts of Scotland and England within days, potentially covering 12 counties, as temperatures may fall to around -1C.

The latest maps, generated by WXCharts, indicate that snow could reach parts of Scotland and northern England by Thursday, November 12. Patches of snow accumulation are shown across northern Scotland, with the Highlands appearing particularly vulnerable to wintry conditions.

Areas Most Likely to See Snow

The most significant accumulations could occur across northern and central parts of the Scottish Highlands, while other areas, including Moray and Aberdeenshire, could also experience snowfall. Further south, parts of northern England could see wintry conditions, particularly across higher ground in Cumbria, Northumberland, and the Pennines.

However, the snowfall signal across England is less pronounced than in Scotland. Temperatures could also fall to around -1C in Scotland, raising the prospect of freezing conditions as the snow arrives.

Forecast Duration and Rain Risk

The forecast indicates that snow could remain on the ground in some areas, especially across the Scottish Highlands, until around November 16. By then, a band of rain moving in from the Atlantic could bring milder and wetter conditions, potentially melting much of the remaining snow.

The Met Office long-range forecast, however, does not mention snow. For November 8 to November 17, it predicts high pressure is likely to dominate conditions across much of the country initially, with plenty of cloud but limited rain or drizzle.

Met Office Outlook

The forecast adds that it will be "quite breezy in the south", with a greater chance of some fog patches in northern areas where winds will be lighter. It continues: "As the high pressure begins to migrate away to the east, frontal systems may attempt to bring some occasional rain to parts of the southwest and/or northwest at times, though exactly how much progress into the UK this makes is uncertain."

Rainfall is most likely to be below average in many areas for this period as a whole, with temperatures initially a little below average before returning to near or slightly above average.

Counties with Potential Snowfall

In England, the counties include Cumbria, Northumberland, County Durham, North Yorkshire, Lancashire, and Derbyshire. In Scotland, the counties are Highland, Moray, Aberdeenshire, Angus, Perth and Kinross, and Argyll and Bute.
