This week, the UK has experienced persistent and intense rainfall, leading to significant flooding, especially in southern regions. Weather maps indicate rain clouds moving in from the Atlantic, spreading across the nation throughout the day. Met Office forecaster Alex Burkill has highlighted a band of rain extending from northern England through Wales to the southwest, with further precipitation expected to affect southern and eastern parts as the afternoon progresses.
Burkill noted, "This band of rain running from northern England through Wales towards the south west. There is some drier weather in parts of the south east but that’s where we’ve had a few pockets of mist and fog in places as well." He added that while initial rain may ease, additional showers are forecast, maintaining cloudy and wet conditions across much of England and Wales.
Four Critical Safety Steps Recommended by the Environment Agency
In response to the flood warnings, the Environment Agency has outlined four essential steps for individuals in areas where flooding is expected or severe. These guidelines are designed to enhance safety and reduce potential damage during such weather events.
- Turn Off Utilities: If it is safe to do so, residents should shut off gas, electricity, and water supplies. Importantly, avoid touching electrical switches while standing in water to prevent electrocution hazards.
- Relocate to Safety: Move family members, vehicles, pets, and valuable items to higher ground or upstairs areas to protect them from rising water levels.
- Use Flood Protection Products: Deploy available flood defence measures, such as flood barriers or air brick covers, to help safeguard properties from water ingress.
- Follow Official Advice: Adhere to instructions from local councils or emergency services, which may include evacuation orders to ensure personal safety.
The agency stresses that these actions are crucial in areas under flood warnings, where flooding is anticipated, or severe flood warnings, indicating a danger to life.
