The United Kingdom is bracing for an abrupt return of winter-like conditions, with the latest weather maps indicating a sharp drop in temperatures that could see the mercury plunge to -3C in parts of Scotland. This cold snap, driven by a surge of Arctic air, is set to arrive on Wednesday, May 6, following a period of unseasonably warm and sunny weather.
Timing and Impact of the Cold Snap
According to data from WXCharts, the cold front will sweep across the country early on Wednesday morning, around 6am. While Monday saw temperatures hovering near 18C in and around London, the midweek forecast paints a much chillier picture. Scotland is expected to bear the brunt of the freeze, with Inverness facing lows of -3C. Major English cities will not be spared either, with Manchester and Birmingham dropping to 2C by 6pm on Wednesday. London, Oxford, Gloucester, and Norwich are predicted to see lows of 6C.
Met Office and Expert Commentary
The Met Office has stated: "Turning cooler for all as northerly winds set in across the UK. Some showers at times, though these lighter and fewer than the weekend with sunny spells emerging as well." Nick Finnis of Netweather.tv elaborated in his blog: "The new week will feature a cooler northerly flow to start the week, eventually veering northeasterly by mid-week, with a fair bit of cloud spreading down across the country in this flow - thick enough to bring scattered showers in places, though many places missing them and staying dry." He added that Wednesday is likely to be the coolest day, with temperatures reaching only 10-15C at best.
Eight Coldest Cities in the UK
The following cities are forecast to experience the lowest temperatures during this cold snap:
- Aberdeen: -1C
- Dundee: -1C
- Glasgow: -1C
- Edinburgh: -1C
- Perth: -1C
- Inverness: -3C
- Newcastle: 0C
- York: 0C
Finnis noted that temperatures across the UK and much of northern and western Europe will fall below the seasonal average during the daytime on Wednesday. He concluded: "Wednesday looks like the coolest day of the week, as flow turns northeasterly, bringing arctic air in across the north. Could be quite cloudy across many areas, with limited spells of sunshine and some showers across northern and western areas."
