Parklife 2026 made a vibrant return to Heaton Park on Saturday, June 20, with the sun shining brightly for the first time in several years. The festival, one of the UK's largest metropolitan music events, drew thousands to the Bury park for a day of music, fashion, and unexpected moments.
Gates opened at 12pm, and the first acts to grace the stages were pioneers Alexandria and Niamh at The Valley and the Matinee, while Catching Cairo thanked early arrivals at the Magic Stage. New features for 2026 included secret sets, a food court, a novelty supermarket, and Polaroid photographers offering vintage snaps for £8.
Prospa and Josh Baker Draw Early Crowds
Leeds electronic duo Prospa, comprising Harvey Blumler and Guiorgi 'Gosha' Smith, drew one of the largest early crowds at The Valley around 1pm. The duo rose to fame in 2018 with their breakthrough hit Prayer, named 'the hottest record in the world' by Annie Mac. Their set was followed by local DJ Josh Baker, who had unfinished business after his set was cut short last year. Playing tracks including Leave A Message, Back It Up, and Down To The Bone, Baker told the Manchester Evening News, 'We started from not even being on the flyer for my first set at Parklife to now playing on the mainstage. It feels unbelievable.'
4am Kru and Fan Reactions
Later, jungle and drum and bass collective 4am Kru delivered an interpretive dance show on The Valley, featuring street dancing, beatboxing, and topless drumstick slapping. Attendee Anastasia Howden, 20, said, 'It's been really good,' but noted the lack of seating and shade in the heat. Lewis Norris, 19, added, 'I was meant to see them at Warehouse Project but didn't, so I was excited to see them today. It's our first time here. Prospa was also really good, such good vibes.'
Fashion and Atmosphere
Festival fashion leaned toward bohemian chic, with bejewelled shawls, low-rise chunky belts, ruffled skorts, football shirts, and bucket hats popular. Charlotte Crowther, 28, said she and her sister Sophie, 30, and Jack Smith, 31, came mainly for drum and bass acts on the Magic Sky Budweiser Stage. 'We came two years ago and preferred this year, today's line-up has been really good,' she said.
Surprise Appearances: Bez and Aitch
At the Beatbox area, Artful Dodger kicked off nostalgic vibes, declaring 'it's a rave right now!' Happy Mondays legend Bez appeared for a DJ set, acting as a hype man and urging fans to 'call the cops' in a nod to Step On, mixed with KRS-One's Sound of Da Police. At the Magic Sky stage, Manchester DJ BOU was joined by Moston rapper Aitch for an unscheduled rendition of Raving In The Studio and Ring My Bell. Aitch declared, 'O161 every time,' referencing his home area code.
Nia Archives and Skepta Shine
Nia Archives, named Artist of the Year by BBC Music Introducing and Best Breakthrough DJ by DJ Mag in 2024, took over The Valley between 4am Kru and Skepta. Her 2023 hit Baianá felt anthemic amid World Cup hype. Skepta delivered a standout set, opening with Shutdown and performing That's Not Me, Toxic, Energy, and Papi Chulo. A highlight was Praise the Lord with A$AP Rocky, sending the crowd into chaos. He closed with 'it's coming home,' referencing the World Cup.
Sammy Virji Closes Day One
Sammy Virji headlined The Valley, closing the first night with a celebration of bassline and UK garage. His set featured collaborations with Skepta (Cops & Robbers) and Flowdan (Shella Verse). Fireworks and pyro capped off the evening. Virji will play Electric Island in Toronto later this month and Cardiff Castle in July.
